Core Principles of Juche
Chajusong (자주성) — Independence
The right of a nation to determine its own destiny without external interference. Self-determination in politics, standing on one's own feet diplomatically.
Charip (자립) — Self-Reliance
Economic independence. Building one's own productive forces. Not depending on foreign aid or exploitation for survival.
Chawi (자위) — Self-Defense
The ability to protect one's sovereignty. Military independence. Not relying on foreign powers for security.
The Key Insight
Juche developed as a response to Korea's history of invasion and colonization. It's anti-imperialism, not anti-West per se. It's the assertion that Korea should be master of its own fate—a position any nation can understand and respect.
